From as far back as the Norman Conquests of the region, the Cinque Ports are historic harbours that were used by the French: All of which apart from Dover are now unused for commercial use or transport. These five ports were the defence of the Nation: Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Sandwich and Dover, with the aid of Rye and Winchelsea. A visit to any one of these attractive towns makes a great day out for everyone.
There is a deep and powerful historical element to all of the county, and many important castles, stately homes, and sites of extraordinary interest: These include, Bayham Abbey Lamberhurst, Canterbury Cathedral, Chartwell which is the home of Winston Churchill, Chiddingstone Castle, Deal Castle, Dover Castle, Dungeness Nuclear Power Station, The Grange in Ramsgate, Hever Castle, Inghtham Mote, Knole House, Leeds Castle, Penhurst Place, the Roman Fort of Reculver, Richborough Roman Fort and Castle, Rochester Castle, Rochester Cathedral, Scotney Castle, Sissinghurst Gardens and Castle, Tenterden, Upnor Castle, and Wlmer Castle.
If you're not a culture vulture, and retail therapy is more your thing, you can still have a superb day out at Blue Water Shopping Centre, the second largest covered shopping centre in the UK. Then there are zoos' such as Park just beside Canterbury, and Port Lympne Zoo, plus the Rare Breads Centre near Woodchurch.
For fans of steam travel, there is plenty to enjoy, with the East Kent Railway, the Kent and East Sussex Railway, the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, and the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway.
